INTERVIEW WITH ROB JOHNSON

Questions and interview by Harry Kuipers

What's the history of Magnitude 9?
Well Corey Brown and me started working on songs together in the spring of 1997. This is how Magnitude 9 was formed. We decided to start a new band and so then I contacted the other members and we all hit it off. We decided to write and record a full CD.
How did you come in contact with Corey?
I heard Corey on the first Psychodrama CD, 'The Illusion'. I really liked his voice. At the time I was releasing my instrumental CDs in Japan on Leviathan Records. David T. Chastain, the owner of Leviathan put me in touch with Corey. Leviathan records licensed the Psychodrama CD in Japan. I told David I wanted to start a new band and mentioned I'd like to get Corey to sing. He was very helpful in putting Corey and myself in touch. Then Corey and I would talk on the phone and trade tapes back and forth in the mail.
And how did you come in contact with the other members?
I have known Kevin Chown (bass) for a few years, because he is from the same state in USA that I'm from (Ohio). I used to see him play bass in other bands. Drummer John Homan and I have known each other for years and played in bands together. The keyboard player Joseph Anastacio Glean was also sending his demos to leviathan records, so David Chastain also helped to put us in touch.
Tell something about 'Chaos To Control' (is it a concept, how were the reactions etc.)
'Chaos to control' is our 'idea & concept' of how the world we are living in today in the last years of this century appears to us. That is what most of the song lyrics are about as well as what the 'future' will all hold for us. We love this world and it's so sad to us to see war, starving kids, violence, etc. We try to express our feelings about the issues on 'chaos to control'.
You're writing a new album, aren't you? Are you almost finished or have you just begun?
Yes! We have already begun. We now have 6 new songs written for the new Magnitude 9 CD. Some of the titles are 'Quiet Desperation', 'Afterlife', 'Mind Over Fear' and 'Temples Of Gold'.
Do these songs contain the same message/concept?
Well, to be honest, you might ask Corey this question, because he writes all of our lyrics. I do not write any lyrics, mainly just the music.
When is the planned release date?
We hope for a fall-winter 1999 release date. If that is not possible, it will for sure be in the early months of the new year 2000.
Can we be the first to get the title and the track list?
Sure, as soon as we know the entire title and track list, I would be happy to let you know.
By who are you mostly influenced? (Malmsteen and...? Or is it unconsciously like Malmsteen? It does sound like that...)
I have always really liked Yngwie Malmsteen. He has influenced me very much and I appreciate what he did to bring back rock guitar in the early 80s. I'm also influenced by Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Steve Vai, etc.
What are your favorite bands?
Wow, that's a tough question because I like so many!!! Some I like these days are Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Helloween, Shadow Gallery, Royal Hunt, Symphony X, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarious, Queensryche, etc.
With which band do you want to play and where?
I'd like to tour in Japan and Europe with Yngwie Malmsteen or Fates Warning. Really, all over the world would be a great time!!
Imagine: You have unlimited money to spend. And you are asked to make an once-and-only CD with musicians you want. Who will you invite?
OK here's my line up: Vocals - DC Cooper [ex- royal hunt] Drums - Mike Teranna [Yngwie Malmsteen, Macalpine] Bass - John Myung [Dream Theater] Keyboards - Jens Johansson [Yngwie, Stratovarious] Guitar - Me!
What are your plans for the future?
To hopefully continue to release new Magnitude 9 music, tour, meet our fans and have fun.
