PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE
- SOLO
Repertoire: Solo percussion repertoire ranges from percussion classics by Xenakis, Stockhausen, Ferneyhough, Feldman, Cage to performance theatre works of Globokar and Kagel, to sound poetry arrangement for voice and percussion based on Schwitters UR Sonata, to original performance pieces by Tomlinson to improvisations on $2 toy instruments.
Commissions: Since late 80’s have commissioned and premiered more than 40 pieces for solo percussion including works by Vinko Globokar, David Harris, Erik Griswold, Anthony Pateras and many more.

Current Chamber Music Groups
Clocked Out Duo (US/Australian duo combining sound poetry, improvisation, contemporary music and kinetic sculpture, member since 1997) - Performed throughout the USA, England, South Korea, Iceland, Spain, China and Australia. Appearances include Totally Huge New Music Festival, Musica Viva Menage Series in Melbourne, Sydney Spring Festival, Cruce in Madrid, Punkt Tonleikar in Iceland, Club Zho in Perth, and Big Sur Experimental Music Festival. First CD released Oct 2000, Every Night the Same Dream COP-CD001 which is regularly played on ABC-FM and 3RRR in Australia and KFJC in San Fransisco.
red fish blue fish (US percussion sextet, member since 1995) - Performed throughout United States and Mexico including performances at the Lincoln Centre, New York and Japan-America Theatre, LA. rfbf has a repertoire of more than 30 important percussion pieces including Stockhausen Mikrophonie, Reich Music for 18 Musicians, Drumming, Xenakis Pleiades, Persaphassa, Nono Fur Luigi Dallapiccola, and Griswold Strings Attached.
Australian Art Orchestra (Australian big band/improvising orchestra, member since 2001) - Toured “Into the Fire” to London, Copenhagen, Prague, Hannover, the Sydney Opera House and Brisbane Biennale plus premiered Sandy Evans Testimony at the Sydney Opera House
Elision (Australian New Music Ensemble, member since 1996) - regular percussionist as well soloist on 1998 Ferneyhough CD. Touring with Liza Lim’s Yu Ling Jie in Australia, Europe and Japan.
Intergalactic Contemporary Ensemble (USA, member since 1997) - solo guest artist at the Weissman Art Gallery, April 2000 US tour and 2001 US and London Jazz Festival tour.

1996 –8 Tomlinson/McNutt Duo (flute and percussion) – Performed recitals in San Diego, LA and Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Specialised in works by Feldman and regularly performed his epic 4 1/2 hour For Philip Guston with David Shively.
1996-00 Libra (Melbourne New Music Ensemble, member since 1996) - Guest artist and casual percussionist including 1998 Sydney Spring New Music Festival.
1995-9 SONOR (UCSD Contemporary Music Ensemble) - Performed in San Diego and LA including premieres by Brian Ferneyhough, Rand Steiger, and Roger Reynolds.
1994 Armandinda Percussion Group (Hungarian Percussion Quartet) - guest performer in Sydney Spring New Music Festival.
1990-6 ACME New Music (founding member in Adelaide) - Premiered more that forty solo and chamber music by Adelaide composers.

- MULTI-MEDIA/MULTI ARTS
2002 Tomlinson/Leak/Humble/Hewitt - percussion based quartet focused on origianl materail using spacial improvisation, new instruments and theatrical devices. Premiered in 2001 Astra Chamber Music series. Also performed at Autumn Music Festival, Melbourne 2002.
2001 Double Vision – new mutli disciplinary show written and directed by Maryanne Lynch, music by John Rodgers and performances by dancer Lisa O’Neill, singer Christine Johnston and Vanessa Tomlinson. Premiered at QPAC’s Merivale Studio.
Double Venturi – collaborative project teaming up musicians with sound sculptures to create site specific works at the Footscary Arts Centre, Melbourne.
Clocked-Out Trio (Interactive real time computer music trio, member since 1997) - Performed in USA, Australia and China, including residency at Sichuan Conservatorium of Music in 1999, performances at Empty Bottle (Chicago) and Gus Lucky’s (Minneapolis) in 2000 plus Stanford University and San Diego in 2001.
2000 DADA Cabaret (Australian multi-media show) - Co-directed, co-wrote this Dada/Fluxus/free improv extravaganza featuring Kurt Schwitters epic UR Sonata, the bluepolesquartet and Ernie Althoff. Received Best Cabaret Melbourne Fringe Award and Melbourne Green Room Award.
1996-9 Global Jam (Live internet visual/audio improvisation) - Designed by Vibeke Sorrenson, Rand Steiger and Miller Puckette, funded by Intel Arts research Funds 1997-99 and musically developed by Steven Schick, George Lewis, Scott Walton and Tomlinson. Performances in Greece-San Diego, New York-Portland and in Los Angeles and San Diego.

The Make it up Club 4 th Anniversary Festival (February 2002) - featured solo artist including broadcast on ABC-FM
Primer Festival Internacional de Musica I Dansa Improvisades (May 2000) - guest artist performing free improvisation with dancers and musicians from around the world.
The Planet (Tuesday night venue in Melbourne featuring the cutting edge of improvised music) - regular artist in various groups and combinations.
Bucketrider Bigband – Cover of Coltrane’s Meditations and SunRa tribute concerts.
Sandy Evans not-so-big-band – Melbourne Womens Jazz Festival 2000.
1996-01 Performed numerous concerts in the USA, Australia and Europe with improvisers such as: Muhal Richard Abrahms, Anthony Burr, Douglas Ewart, Erik Griswold, George Lewis, Mary Oliver, Tim O’Dwyer, Cor Fuhler, Anna McMichael, Peter Humble, Warren Burt, Sandy Evans, Satsuki Odamura, Elliott Dagleish, John Rogers, Erkki Veltheim, Pauline Oliveros, Scott Walton and more.

1995-9 San Diego Symphony, LaJolla Symphony, Freiburg Symphonie: rank and file (casual and contract) - all work on a per call basis. All work as a section percussionist.
1988-96 Adelaide Symphony Orchestra: acting principal, rank and file (casual and contract). Duties varied from per call basis to contracted acting principal and section percussionist.
1989-94 Adelaide Chamber Orchestra: principal and rank and file (casual).
1990 World Youth Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur: principal percussionist and timpanist.
1990 Adelaide Festival Orchestra under Sir George Solti, rank and file.
1988 Australian Youth Orchestra – section percussionist.

COMPOSITION
Bowls (2002) - for 3 players on 12 Chinese rice bowls with water. Premiered January 2002, Chengdu Arts Centre, Sichuan Province, China. Performed by Erik Griswold, Zou Xiangping and Vanessa Tomlinson. Received 3 performances to date.
Electric Mahjong (2002) - musical theatre work for 4 players. Premiered January 2002, Chengdu Arts Centre, Sichuan Province, China. Performed by Erik Griswold, Zou Xiangping, Jiangping and Vanessa Tomlinson. Received 2 performances to date.
Old Flex (2001) - for 3 performers with instruments built by Neil McGlauchlan (gongs and lithophones). Premiered in August 2001, Footscray Arts Centre with Double Venturi.
Dear Judy (2001) - for solo balloons. Premiered during Virtuosic Visions Series at the Melbourne Museum, March 2001. Received 4 performances to date.
Zai Shuo Yi Ce (2001) - for balloons and piano. Premiered at Musica Viva’s Menage Series, Central Hall, Fitzroy Melbourne. Received 12 performances to date.
Practice (2000) - for voice and percussion. Premiered at the Centre for Research in the Computing Arts, San Diego 2000. Received 11 performances to date.
Endgame (1998) - for percussion and interactive computer. Composed in collaboration with Harry Castle as a real time installation in the Centre for Research and the Performing Arts, San Diego. Performed in China, USA, Australia and Spain.
Oooooooooooo (1997) - for percussion and voice. Premiered at Mandeville Hall, San Diego. Performed in USA and Australia. Received 5 performances to date.
Lanke Trr Gll (1997) - for four guiros and voice. Performances in USA, Germany, Australia, China and Iceland including being a featured work during Frau Musica Nova in Koln, 1998.
The Wall (1996) - for trumpet and percussion. Premiered in Mandeville Recital Hall, University of California, San Diego 1996.
