Music Review Hey, here's some info from Live! Music Review's August issue about BEANO's BOYS: Songs 1-9 BBC sessions 1965-67; songs 10-14 live in Bremen, 1968. "The Bluesbreakers' reputation as an academy of excellence for aspiring young blues guitarists overlooks one pertinent fact. That without John Mayall to stubbornly and steadfastly lead the group, it wouldn't've mattered who played guitar...John Williams, Segovia, God (the other one, the one with the beard and the famous kid)....it wouldn't've mattered. They'd've been just another blues band from the wrong side of the Surrey delta. Instead, they became one of THE principle legends of the whole British 1960s, and this collection of three of the band's countless BBC sessions offers up a few good reasons why. Most of the usual suspects star, but it's not the axeman histrionics which blind so much as the way those histrionics never eclipse the brilliance of the rest of the band. And that of course was Mayall's secret, the ability to maintain equality when the whole world was screaming "superstar"...and of course, it was also his downfall, as ego after ego quit the band in search of greater recognition. By the end of the 1960's, the Bluesbreakers was basically nothing mroe than a testing ground for future virtuousos, and it would take Mayall himself another 20+years to get back on his original, youthful track. This collection catches things when they were hot. Dating from Arpil 1965, the three Clapton tracks don't vary too much from the versions from the LPs, although they have a lovely looseness which constantly threatens to explode. The revelations come from the Taylor years, the storming, lengthy "Parchman Farm" caught live in Germany towards the end of his Bluesbreaking days, and the BBC sessions which simply cook the competition. The sleeve credits Peter Green with guitar on tracks 1-4, Clapton with 7-9, and Mick Taylor with the rest. In fact, Green is nowhere in sight, and all six opening tracks date from Taylor's stint with the band: "Worried Love," "Supermarket day," "Snowy Wood," and "Suspicion" from a session on November 5, 1967; "Picture On The Wall" and the mistitled "Mayfair Blues" (actually "Knockers Step Forward") from March 31, 1968. Given Green's current profioe, that information might put off a few prospective purchasers. Don't let it! Taylor may not have been Green's superiour, but when he tried, he was certainly his equal. And on these showings, he's trying really hard." -review by Dave Thompson --------------------SFJ-------------------- From: Sam Miller > Subject: please insert in next journal - Thanks!! Disc 3 and 4: New York, Madison Square Garden, 6/22/75 >From Rolling Stone Magazine, July 31, 1975: "Then the tent went up, the petals dropped (smoothly and complete this time), and "Honky Tonk Women" began. But by the time they finished "All Down the Line", the second song, it was clear that something was drastically amiss. The bass was far too loud, and so was Jagger's voice. In some parts of the hall, Preston's keyboards drowned the guitars;in others, they couldn't be heard at all. Worse, Jagger seemed uncomfortable with the stage, which looked a lot larger then the regular one. He didn't really know what to do with the space, and the wireless microphone which had given him such increased mobility in the other shows, couldn't be used. "Happy" and "Tumbling Dice" sounded fit for a roller rink. It was awful -still, parts were sublime as Watts held it together and Richard riffed wildly, pulling Wood in from solo's that suddenly seemed to reveal just what Mick Taylor's advantages were. After "Jumping jack Flash", the band didn't leave the stage, even though the houselights were up and the crowd recognised that something special was going on. As Richard moved to bass and Wyman to guitar (Mathijs: in reallity both Richards and Wyman played bass), the first throbbing note of "Sympathy For the devil" split the air. A firecracker, tossed from the crowd, erupted a foot from the stage. From the wings a mystery guitarist appeared. In drape coat and a cap, with a big auburn beard, he at first seemed to be John Lennon with Clairol. Then the shouts of recognition went up- it was Eric Clapton- so besmirched with make-up that he was virtually unreconigsable, even through binoculars. If the set had been a drag -easily the worst of the tour, though it was later learned that one of Woods amps had blown- this made up for it. Finally Wood descended on the elevator from which the 15-foot cock and the dragon appear, played though the resultant feedback and rose again with Jagger leering behind him. As the petals folded and the music concluded it was Richard though, who raced to the gap and waved goodbye" Part of the 8 CD set "Tour of the Americas 75", disc 3 and 4 feature the complete MSG June 22nd show in very good audience quality. This is what makes bootlegs great: while reading the Rolling Stone Magazine review one can musically experience the whole show! The show is indeed pretty lame, and you can hear the Stones are struggling through the show. At the first songs Bill Wyman's bass is way too loud, but this is altered later on. The quality of the recording is then really good, all instruments can be heard well and clear, especially the drums. During the Preston songs music can be heard on the background. I am not sure whether this is a badly erased tape, or the sound system picking up some frequencies! Sympathy for the Devil is really funny, and really bad. It seems Jagger is completely lost since he sings of beat. Lots of whistling and feedback. Couldn't Clapton be heard on "MSG 75 with Eric Clapton", now it is quite clear what he tries to do. Starting with an exact copy of Keith's studio version solo, but soon leading into some free jamming since the band seems to be lost anyway. Great to have this show documented on this set! She showed up at his court date too. He credits her very much with his light sentence. Interesteing point which songs all three 2nd guitarrists played. I can think of "Little Queenie", "Let It Rock","I'm Free", "Street Fighting Man"(almost), "Midnight Rambler"(almost). Almost means Brian played them in the studio. But who knows? We know that Woody played "Tell me" and "Down The Road Apiece". What did Brian do on "Stray Cat Blues?" Cause Ron played that one in Knebworth. Couldn't find anything on the Kansas City Show from'81. Curiously enough it's during Taylor's period that they didn't touch any old songs. God knows they had enough new material in that era. Plus Brian-era material didn't have that nostalgic feel yet, the way "Honest I Do" etc. have today."The Spider And The Fly"...And i'm sure Ron has played "Carol" at least once with the Stones. Keith doesn't have a friendship with Nils Lofgren. Actually he went through a period where he was especially rude to other musicians who really admired him. He openly derided Nils Lofgren, who then went on to the next available 'Boss'. He really put down Patti Smith, I remember in NYC during the Punk Days. He wouldn't do all that today. Question: This Art Kane. Are we talking about Killer Kane, Bass Player from the great but mostly dead N.Y.Dolls. Last I heard from Kane he was dead. But these stories are often from not the most reliable sources. It couldn't be... I just found a program that allows every VL CD_ROM to be played. Problem is I honestly how I did it, but I got it stored on ZIP. I have played 5 different VL's on my PC so far and until a few days ago I could not play a single one. In the song nils is pleading to Keith to quit his destructive lifestyle and to stay alive for the sake of his millions of fans. Nils takes a shot at the 'Keith" style of playing in that song and that works out really fine, i mean you can hear its not Keith, but it's a "Keith" arrangement with a touch of Nils. The rest of the album is also worth listening to. I have also a vinyl album (the titel escapes me, and i don't have time to dig it up )with "Happy" . Nils makes a good job of it, after all he's a great guitar player and a fine singer. I don't know if Nils is a friend of Keith, but i heard that when Mick Taylor left the Stones, Nils applied for the job, i believe it never got beyond managers level. At least Nils got to be the replacement of Bruce Sprigsteens "Keith" Steve van Zandt after all. The Rolling Stones' ''(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'' topped the list of the 100 greatest rock songs in a VH1 poll of 700 people in the music industry. The 1965 song about rock's favorite subject - sex - has one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in music. Keith Richards said it came to him one night while he was sleeping. ``It kind of sticks up as an anthem for the time it was released and for every generation that came since,'' Todd Schwartz, VH1 programming director, said after the list was released Thursday. The Beatles had nine songs on the list, easily the most. But their best, ``Hey Jude,'' came in at only No. 9. ``The Beatles had so many songs that the vote got divided,'' Schwartz said. Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, U2 and R.E.M. were shut out of the Top 100 for the same reason: Voters couldn't decide on one song. Aretha Franklin's ``Respect'' came in second and Led Zeppelin's ``Stairway to Heaven,'' a staple of FM radio in the 1970s, was third. Rounding out the top 10 are ``Like a Rolling Stone'' by Bob Dylan; ``Born to Run'' by Bruce Springsteen; ``Hotel California'' by the Eagles; ``Light My Fire'' by the Doors; ``Good Vibrations'' by the Beach Boys; ``Hey Jude''; and ``Imagine'' by John Lennon. Five Stones cuts made it, with four each by Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin. Bob Dylan had three plus his composition ``All Along the Watchtower,'' but voters liked Jimi Hendrix's version better. The list's oldest song was ``Rock Around the Clock'' by Bill Haley & His Comets, released in 1955. The newest was Nirvana's ``Smells Like Teen Spirit,'' from 1991. Nirvana's hit was the only one from the 1990s to make it. Schwartz said it may be because VH1's voters were even older than the network's usual audience. VH1 aims at age 30 and up. Among the musicians to vote on VH1's panel were U2's Bono, Johnny Cash, Art Garfunkel, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed and the late Curtis Mayfield. VH1 will count down the list in a special that runs over five nights, starting Jan. 17, featuring video clips and interviews. --------------------SFJ-------------------- From: "Freddie Mullins" > Subject: Piece of Gold CD-R I have a CD-R copy of Piece of Gold that was for a trade that fell through.
