[Goodfellas]
++++
From the same demigods that brought us
the even better CASINO comes this tale of the rise and
fall of a Mafioso. Ray Liotta plays Henry
Hill, a kid who spends his life running with Paul Cicero's (Paul
Sorvino) family, which includes Irishman Jimmy
Conway (Robert De Niro) and hair-trigger tempered
Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). He gets married
and has children, but after numerous run-ins with the law,
and with Paul cracking down on his own family,
he decides to enter the Witness Protection Program with
his wife (Lorraine Bracco).
Martin Scorsese is an amazing director, what else can I say? His
depictions of the Mafia give you
an exhilarating feel of adrenaline, yet at the
same time you realize that it's not all fun and games. For
while you may be greeted by all your friends
at a club and raking in cash by the thousands, others may
be plotting your demise. And at the end,
when Henry finally gets out of the Mafia life, you feel anger at
him ... almost as if he has betrayed you.
This couldn't be achieved without the talented actors, especially Liotta
and Pesci. GoodFellas is a
very good movie, and while not quite as good
as Taxi Driver, it's better than the overrated RAGING
BULL.
