----------------------THE BAND------------Karlskrona

Winter 99'----

The gensis of Pearl Jam was rooted in chance and tragegy. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament had both been members of seminal grungers Green River, and later Mother Love Bone with Andrew Wood on vocals. When Wood died of an overdose his long-time friend Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) put together a tribute project called Temple Of The Dog in 1991, Gossard, Ament and new recruited Mike McCready (Love Chile) were roped in, as was Eddie Vedder (Bad Radio), who had provided some vocals for a demo tape put together by the others.

Once Temple Of The Dog was in the can drummer Dave Krusen joined the band. Flirting with different names for the band they came up with Mookie Blaylock, after an basketball player, who didn't like that so they settled with Pearl Jam (after an hallucinatic recipe that Eddies grandmother had).

By spring 1991 Pearl Jam had begun to play live shows in the Seattle area supporting the likes of Alice in Chains. As the word spread out the Seattle scene, the band signed to Epic and their debut album Ten were rushed out (1992). Just as Ten entered the U.S charts Krusen left the band to deal with personal problems and he was replaced by Dave Abbruzzese. The next album was planned for late 1992, but touring schedules slowed things down (supporting acts like the grandfather of grunge Neil Young and The Red Hot Chili Peppers) but in 1993 Vs finally came out. The response to this album was huge and it entered the #1 spot of the Billboard charts. The guitars and rhythms raged more freely, and Vedder displayed his vocal very raw.

In 1994 Vitalogy were released with tracks like Spin The Black Circle and the belligerent threats of Not For You delivered the usual doses of mayhem but you also got tracks like Nothingman and Betterman who were more balad like.

In 1995 they released a album with Neil Young called Mirror Ball. In 1996 their 4th album came - No Code an album were Pearl Jam now jet a new drummer Jack Irons (Red Hot C.P). This album was an U-turn compered to the othe albums with songs like Sometimes (New age like sound, Hail Hail ( Gossard on vocals) and Off he Goes (with it's country- Western sound).

1998 Yield was released and we found us in the hardest Pearl Jam album since Vs with great songs like Do the Evolution, Given to Fly and Low Light. On this album all the Pearl Jam members had contributed on the lyrics and the music, usually it's Eddie who writes the lyrics.

I'd like to end this with words of Eddie Vedder:

"It's not hard to be a rock star. If you want to go around fucking women and cleaning a bunch of teenagers of all their dough because they like your band and charge them up the ying for a T-shirt and concert tickets, that's easy. That's playing the game. What's hard is trying to stop playing the game...to try to treat people fairly and with respect..."

That's what the songs are about...

But first he was stripped, and then he was stabbed by faceless men

well fuckers... he still stands!

And he still gives his love, he just gives it away!

Jeramy -------------------------------- Once

Rearviewmirror ----------------------- Corduroy

Alive ---------------------------------- Spin The Black Circle

W.M.A -------------------------------- Last Exit

Betterman ----------------------------- Nothingman

Jeramy - This song is based on a true very sad story about a boy who commitedsuicide in Texas. The tragic event took place in Richardson Highschool in texas where Jeramy, who was told by the teacher to go to the secretary's office to collect an admissionslip, instead came back to the classroom with a gun and blew his head of.

Once - This song details a violent psychological rage from whith in which heexpresses by becoming an serial killer.

Rearviewmirror - A great song about suicide(!)

Corduroy - This song is about relationships.

Alive - Probably the most famous song made by Pearl Jam. The song is abouta mother who is with a father and the father dies. It's an intense thing because the son looks just like the father. The son grows up to be father, that she lostHis father's dead, and now this confusion, his mother, his love, how does he love her, how does she love him?

Spin The Black Circle - This punk almost thrash song is about Eddies love for Vinyl records.

W.M.A - (White male american) this song is based on a true story that took place in San Fransisco where Eddie witnessed a Cop roughing up some homeless - he went directly to the studio (at the time recording Vs) and started singing about this experience.

Last Exit - This song touches the subject of death. The first word on the lyrics being Die.

Betterman - A track about failed love.

Nothingman - A complex love song "don't fuck up what you got!"

New record coming out soon. (spring 2000)
