[ The Band ]

dylan - in my own words [news] [facts] [dylan-jesus] [links] |
In January
and February Bob Dylan & The Band played 40 long awaited concerts in
big arenas. 5 million people mailed orders for the 650 000 tickets that
was available on the tour, making this tour the most sought-after in rock
& roll history. To the public this was a tour that should continue
where the '66 world tour abruptly ended. In a way it was like that. The
pressure and the public expectation on Dylan was extremely high. Even if
Dylan had done all in his power to destroy the demand for Dylan as "Bob
Dylan" the cult figure by releasing dreadful albums like Self Portrait.
He felt the demand and that he had to do this tour to please his audience,
the true "comeback" of Bob Dylan. You can see the tour as a great
retrospective on Dylan's masterwork. The shows consisted of part Bob Dylan solo, part Dylan & The Band and part The Band only. The shows were similar night after night. The official release Before The Flood are quite representative for the tour. The remaking of some originally acoustic songs are very good, such as Ballad of Hollis Brown. Dylan's singing feels very often rushed and lacks sensitivity, very different from the '66 tour. What you get is a performance full of energy and power that suits most of the songs but maybe not all. Dylan knew that he had to do this tour to give himself the opportunity to leave his earlier work behind and prepare the public and himself for a new era of artistic achievement and creativity. The next tour was the Rolling Thunder Revue, very, very different from this. |
