World tour '66
| bob dylan - in my own words [news] [facts] [dylan-jesus] [links] |
The world tour of 1966
reached from North America to Europe via Australia. A number of 47 concerts were played
from February to May. Bob Dylan was backed by members of The Band, then called The Hawks.
Levon Helm, the drummer, were at these concerts partly replaced by Mickey Jones. The shows were divided in two half's, the first with Dylan alone with guitar and harmonica, the second half electric with full band. The first half was always a triumph even though he mostly played songs from "electric" albums. The second half were often booed and met with hostility. One show on this tour was released in obscure circles as "The Royal Albert Hall Concert '66". The concert was actually recorded in Manchester days earlier, not at Royal Albert Hall in London. Some of the conversation between Dylan and the audience was dubbed to the Manchester tape from Albert Hall. The 1966 concerts are now rated among the best in rock history, if not the best. Dylan years later commented on the tour that they were constantly "on". No rest, no time to recover. You can hear Dylan's exhausted voice between the songs, but still the singing are absolutely amazing. The interaction between Dylan and musicians are truly stunning. It's like every instrument plays it's own solo and at the same time moving in one direction, Dylan's. Everybody sets the mood perfectly behind Dylan's howling and biting voice. On the Manchester show the electric part starts with Tell Me Momma in full force and the show increase in intensity all the way up to a completely outrageous Like A Rolling Stone played "f#¤/*n' loud". You will never get tired of listening to one of these shows, lifetime guarantee. |
