Accessories, optional modifications, repair,
quality of Silva compasses
| When mounting the compass freestanding (not in
a bulkhead) an L-section
aluminum extrusion is useful. You shape it
yourself with basic tools
to fit e g the lower edge of the compass. Then
you can mount the L-section
to e g the cabin roof. Price US$ 10. See also Mounting |
US$ 10 |
| If the action around the compasses with
movable makers may unintentionally
move these markers you can mount a circular protective
transparent strip
a couple of centimeters, half inch, from the
copula. Price protective strip,
including screws when needed, US$ 6. Mounted
protective strip US$ 10. |
US$ 6 or 10 |
| Silva's has a mast bracket (see Silva's
site) for Silva 100P, 103P, 103PE
compasses. I guess, but don't know,
that it can be used also for 1000 and 100B/H
compasses with smaller modifications
to the mounting holes in the compass bracket.
Price US$ 45. |
US$ 45 |
| For a less cluttered view the conical
dial of Ansar 2 and 4
compasses can be painted black to hide this
dial. Price US$ 10. |

For other magnetic zones ad US$ 30
per compass and expect
about two weeks longer delivery time. |
US$ 30 |
| Damaged Silva compass? I may be able to
repair it. |
|
| About the quality of Silva compasses.
Having worked with Silva
compasses for 25 years I can say: It is a high
quality compass, including
the bearing of the compass card. It is fully
spherical, not common, which
gives the least disturbance of the compass card
in a sea way. |
|
| You can visit Silva's site
and see what the compasses look like unmodified,
get their dimensions etc. |
|

Notes Ansar 2 and 4 compasses
| The movable markers of
the Ansar 4 compass is now
made circular instead of square as shown
in pictures.
I now make the vertical pointers
of the 100 and 1000 compasses
some 3.5 mm wide, slightly narrower
than shown in some of the pictures.
The color of the red and green
markers of some compass
pictures are enhanced. On the real
compass they are duller.
|
The color of the "best
lift" and "worst header"
markers may vary, yellow, sharp
red.
When reading a compass course
the compass must be read
straight from behind to minimize parallax
error. This is because
the modification requires the lubber line to
be placed some distance from
the compass card.
|
If you need a compass for
accurate navigation it
is strongly suggested you have a separate
compass for this purpose.
(Compasses must be placed at least one
meter apart to avoid
interference.) |
