When I was testing my "Tropical Travel Ultra Compact and Light Gear, from 90 grams. No bag!" I traveled with a friend and took the opportunity to compare some parts of our luggage and ask him some questions

Here is my friend Dimitrije Wentner with his luggage. The bag on his shoulder is full o DVD's and CD's - "I got them cheap in Indonesia." My friends luggage was not selected for a A to B trip. Instead he had been traveling for some eight months through some twelve countries from Uzbekistan eastward to East Timor and then westward to India. |
Upper collection of items is his medical kit, .8 kg. Two lover items, two aspirins and a small bottle of disinfectant is my medical kit - 10 grams? |
The upper collection is his toiletries, 1.5 kg. Lower row is my toiletries - 30 grams?
|
His camera kit, upper collection. SLR, pocket camera and a video camera. 3.2 kg. Lower row my digital camera (represented by a passport) Sony T7, with video, some 10 mm thick, adaptor, charger and video cable. Total weight around 250 g. |
Questions and answers
After we traveled together I sent an email to Dimitrije with some questions about his luggage and he kindly responded.
|
Question, Q. Hello! I am working on an Internet page: "What is it they have in their back packs that I don't have?" I have seen your camera, medicine and toilet cases. But what more did you have? How many shirts, trousers and shoes?
Dimitrije is using a time saving simplified type of writing (not yet standard in the European Union) and I mostly leave it as he wrote.

Answer, A. ok, i will try to answer all your weird questions :) about 8 t-shirts, 3 shirts, 3 trousers, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of slippers, 1 hammock,1 walkman, 7 music tapes, 1 guidebook, lot's of paper stuff, 96 dvds, 35 cds, 10 rolls of camera film. this year i had lot's of things that i usually don't carry with me because i went shopping in indonesia.

Q I have now used the same trousers and shirt for four weeks. I feel perfectly OK in this respect - not longing for something else. How would you feel? A shity
Q I am not sure you understand. I am of course washing my outfit. How would you feel not being able to alter your dress for one month? I do look a bit different depending on the temperature. Warm: white shirt. Cooler: light blue wind shirt. Cold: wind jacket. A still shity |
Q Which route did you travel? A uzbekistan- kyrgysztan- kazachstan- uzbekistan- tadjikistan- uzbekistan- thailand- malaysia- indonesia- east timor- indonesia- thailand- india. i had lots of luggage at the beginning but i sold lots of old clothes, walkman etc. in uzbekistan. then my luggage got heavy again in indonesia where i bought many things but i managed to deposit it in bali, so i only had to drag it around for a few days.
|
Q For how long? A From 21.sept.2005- to 15.may 2006
Q Did you at some time wish you had much less luggage. Or the other way around? If you had 30 kg free on the plane would you take it?
A any time i have to carry my bags i wish that it would be lighter. you remember when we got on the train in mumbai :) i would not take 30 kg even if the airline would pay me to do so! |

There are many advantages of traveling light. See e g Mark Verbers site, a nice and extensive travel light site - but he doesn't suggest carrying all in the trouser pockets.
See also Peter Cochrane's Blog , "everything including all my technology in a fly fishing style jacket...... But that is something for the future."
A very inspiring site, Ray Jardine's with "light weight backpacking" links at the end. ( I had a direct link here but it no longer works - they seem to change.)
