The most popular model of the Ansar 2 compass is the type with rear facing cupola. I have also made Ansar 2 compasses with the cupola facing upwards. 

An advantage of this orientation is that the angles for viewing the compass can be chosen freely, for example around 60 or 80 degrees from the boats center line, suitable for example for a 

catamaran with a compass mounted at the mast. Or a dinghy with the compass mounted just a bit forward of the viewer, instead of well forward in the boat. 

But I am not totally happy with these compasses because I have difficulties to make good movable markers for this model.
