The
Champions

MODRY
Bohumil (V 45): Sentenced to
15 years. Even though he retired from the game shortly before
the 1949 championship, he was singled out as the mastermind of
the `conspiracy` to defect and received the longest sentence.
BUBNIK
Gustav (70): Sentenced to 14 years. Because of his friendship
with Cpt. Peter Bowe of the U.S. Permit Office in Prague, he was
also charged with espionage. He left Czechoslovakia in 1967. In
1972, as coach of the Finnish National Hockey Team, he led the
Finns to their first historical victory over Czechoslovakia. He
lives in Prague and is currently serving his second term as a
Senator.
KONOPASEK
Stanislav (72): Sentenced to 12 years. After finishing an
active career at the age of 42, he coached the Polish team of
Katowice to a national championship. He li- ves in Prague.
ROZINAK
Vaclav(76): Sentenced to 10 years. Shortly before the Soviet
invasion in 1968 he escaped to Switzerland, where he still teaches
tennis.
KOBRANOV
Vladimir (72): Sentenced to 10 years. The 1949 World CupÕs
MVP. At that time, he was also drafted by the NHLÕs, Detroit Red
Wings. He lives in Switzerland and works as a hockey coach.
JIRKA Josef
(70): Sentenced to 6 years. One of the most successful junior
hockey coaches in the Czech Republic.
UJCIK Mojmir
(V 57): Sentenced to 3 years.
Coached national teams of Austria and Italy.
CERVENY
Zlatko (71): Sentenced to 3 years. Coached several hockey
teams in Yugoslavia. He currently lives in Prague.
HAJNY Premysl
(73): Sentenced to 1 year. In the late 1960Õs, he coached
the Yugoslavian national hockey team and the Swiss National League
champion, Servette Geneva. He li- ves in Prague.
ZABRODSKY
Vladimir (75): The only player who mysteriously escaped imprisonment.
Since his escape from Czechoslovakia in 1964, he has lived in
Sweden and works as a tennis/hockey coach.
