With Ilsa She Wolf of the SS and The Night Porter (both 1974), Salò (1975) and Salon Kitty (1976) the inevitable next step was the nazi exploitation film. Basically these film are just another variation of the old Women-In-Prison theme, but the added elements of SS uniforms and extermination camp settings make them very taboo. The genre was apparently not very successful and only lasted for about two years. If it weren't for the overacting in these films I doubt that they would be watchable. A curious fact is that three directors (Sergio Garrone, Bruno Mattei and Luigi Batzella) contributed to the genre with two films each. Another curious fact is that neither Garrone (often known as Willy Regent) nor Mattei (known as Vincent Dawn, Stefan Oblowsky etc) used pseudonyms on their films... Ca 1976-1978 |
