gothic horror
In 1957 British Hammer Films made their famous Dracula starring Christopher Lee. In 1957 Riccardo Freda made his I vampiri and in 1960 Mario Bava made the classic La maschera del demonio (Mask of Satan / Black Sunday) with the young Barbara Steele, who was to become one of the genre's most popular actresses. She later appeared in L'orribile segreto del dr. Hichcock (Terror of Dr. Hichcock / R. Freda 1962), about a necrophiliac doctor, and Amanti d'oltretomba (Night of the Doomed / Mario Caiano 1965), about a doctor who buries his wife and her lover alive in the basement. These films were very atmospheric and absolutely not intended for children. In Bava's La frusta e il corpo (The Whip and the Body 1963) Hammer-star Lee, as the sadistic Baron Kurt, comes back from the dead to whip his wife.
