Sir Antony Melchett
As a Lord and personal advisor to Queen Elizabeth - thus having to ensure his suggestions are of a reasonably worthwhile and vaguely entertaining nature, otherwise he risks being ruthlessly beheaded - Melchett can only be described as a smug, selfish, pompous git. In attempting to continually impress and compliment the Queen with remarks which are quite blatantly made with a generous dose of 'sucking up', Melchett avoids the temperamental wrath of the Queen.
His role as General Melchett in the fourth series alters his basic character traits by means of converting him into an insane and increasingly confusing individual who has a tendency to shout. Disregarding the life threatening situation which faces his soldiers in the trenches, Melchett is happy with a pampered lifestyle where he gives orders from a secure location - though such orders are usually laden with deranged ideas, which are more commonly identifiable within the mentally disturbed.

You know, if there's one thing I've learned from being in the army, it's never ignore a pooh-pooh. I knew a major: got pooh-poohed; made the mistake of ignoring the pooh-pooh -- he pooh-poohed it. Fatal error, because it turned out all along that the soldier who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other officers, who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, we had to disband the regiment -- morale totally destroyed ... by pooh-pooh!
