Bosse Wärmell (1939-1969)
Bosse Wärmell (1939-1969) was a rare gifted musician
who together with his contemporary colleagues Börje
Fredriksson and Bernt Rosengren belonged to one of the
leading tenor saxophonists, that was ahead in Sweden at the
end of the 50's.
When one hears Bosse Wärmell play it is notable that
the distance between Stockholm and New York is relatively
small. There was no thought of provincialism in him, he
could very well have been there, one amongst the giants. The
same way like Lars Gullin, so was Bosse Wärmell one
with a role in music, where jazzmusic was also a question of
identity and a way to live. A romantics attitude that
consists of a great feeling in creating, but unfortunately
sometimes it could be very vulnerable and easily come into
conflict with daily trivialities.
This music is a part of Swedish music history that is
fresher today than any other time earlier, that also has an
obvious place like Gullin, Bellman, Berwald, Taube or
Vreeswijk.
Roger Bergner
It was an ordinary gig, a live performace at the Golden
Circle. We only met and performed the tunes everybody could
play. Strangely enough one didn't know if the incident
you're with will be unique or historical. Kurt Lindgren and
I had been with Lars Werner's trio for some years, so we had
a great teamwork. Bosse Wärmell's tenor playing was
sensational, one had not heard anything like it. Rolf
Ericson was very surprised and happy every night at Bosse's
great playing. Now that this cd is available, it makes me
think, death is an illusion.
Rune Carlsson,
Spring 1998.
