Columbus,
Ohio (Ticker) -- The
Columbus
Blue Jackets gave their fans a rousing sendoff.
Tyler
Wright scored with 2:19 left in overtime as the Blue
Jackets closed their inaugural season with a 4-3
victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Columbus tied Chicago for fourth place in the Central
Division with 71 points and finished ahead of
Minnesota and Anaheim in the Western Conference. The
Blackhawks had been the only Central Division team
Columbus had not defeated.
"It caps off a really enjoyable season,"
Columbus coach Dave King said. "It's been a
really tremendous journey to watch this team grow and
get better."
After drawing the puck back to Deron Quint on a
faceoff win, Wright deflected Quint's slap slot in
traffic past goaltender Steve
Passmore, who made 24 saves. The goal
originally was credited to Quint, who also scored on
the power play 3:17 into the second.
Wright's goal came six seconds after the Blackhawks
killed a tripping penalty to Steve
Sullivan, whose power-play goal 7:06 into the
third helped the Blackhawks erase a 3-1 deficit.
The Blue Jackets registered all three shots in the
extra session and had a golden opportunity just before
Quint's goal. Passmore stopped David Vyborny's blast
from the right faceoff circle, then made a sliding
kick save on Alex Selivanov's rebound attempt.
Ron Tugnutt made 29 saves for his 22nd win of the
season, setting a record for an expansion club. He
broke the mark shared by Cesare Maniago and John
Vanbiesbrouck. Maniago won 21 games for the Minnesota
North Stars in 1967-68 and Vanbiesbrouck matched that
mark for the Florida Panthers in 1993-94.
"I never would have thought something like this
would happen," Tugnutt said. "This might be
something that lasts a little while."
