The Sharks had to give up Marty McSorley, Todd Gill, Bernie Nicholls, Andrei Zyuzin, Greg Hawgood, Ron Sutter and Ray Whitney. Played 19 games for the Sharks in season 1 before he was demoted to Las Vegas Thunder.

Acquired from the New Jersey Devils Jan 98 as a result of the protectionrule which sent Doug Bodger and Dody Wood to the Devils. John MacLean stayed in Devils because he was protected. In a LML election it was decided later that year that the protectionrule should be demoted. Ken Sutton became one of the last victims of this rule. He has never played a single game in the Sharks jersey so far.
