Have a vital front-line role, translating, transcribing and analysing
information for customers both within and outside our organisation.
A variety of roles, depending on the languages you offer. You may work
with other linguists and Intelligence Analysts, evaluating material to
produce intelligence reports, or visiting London to confer with customers.
Or you may work within our Joint Technical Language Service (JTLS)
translating technical or specialist material for government customers if
your initial application proves successful.
Language requirements do vary from year to year though we often have a
requirement for African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Russian languages and
occasionally European. A language degree is not essential provided you
have a thorough knowledge equivalent to that provided by a degree. You
should have a keen interest in current affairs and be prepared to retrain
in new languages as the need arises.
Starting salaries presently range from £16,221 to £21,019
depending on experience and qualifications. However there are prospects of
moving into higher valued pay ranges depending on skills and experience.
Through time, you'll be eligible for promotion and move into the £18,879
to £24,464 range, or higher. In addition, performance related pay
enables those who perform to a consistently high standard to benefit
accordingly.
>Linguist Sponsorship:
We offer a small number of penultimate and/or final year sponsorship
places to undergraduate students who have already completed the first year
of their honours degree course. You must currently be studying for an
honours degree in one or more African, Asian or Middle Eastern language.
