Translator Instructions

Updated 95-11-22

To save both you and us a lot of time and trouble during translations, please note the following comments.

General

1. Generally we prefer all translations to be made in the same program they were made. If not! Use a common word-processing program that is compatible with ours (find out from us before you start the translation).

2. Translate everything (including table of contents, index and first page) unless otherwise indicated.

Translation In the Same Program as Delivered

1. Respect the layout, don't make any changes unless it is necessary for maintaining the layout. Try to deliver the file with the same layout as when you got it.

2. If your text requires more space than available plea-se try to rephrase it so that it fits (We are open to discussion regarding extra compensation for this). If it isn't possible to reduce the text just leave it as it is, don't try anything funny!

3. If you are translating in to a language that uses a (for us) foreign typeface, e.g. Russian or Greek, please send us a diskette with this typeface.

Translation In a Word Processing Program

1. All text must (as far as possible) be kept to the left margin.

2. Do not press space bar, enter or TAB in sequence (no more than one press at a time).

3. Place page numbers and picture captions in square brackets. Always make references to page numbers, pictures and tables so that the text is easy to identify. For text in pictures, type part of the source text as an identifier beside the translated text.

4. Tables are to be written left-to-right, always beginning at the left margin, giving the column/row number in square brackets alongside.

5. Do not attempt to make a layout in your word-processing program.

6. Generally write text with lower-case letters except where it is necessary, e.g. Beginning.

7. Respect Page Division.

8. Respect text types in running text, e.g. Bold, Underline, Italics.9. Leave only 1 blank line between Titles/Paragraphs -Paragraphs/ Paragraphs.

10. Where Header/Footer appear, type translation once on a separate page on top of your file, or use Header/Footer function in your program.

11. Where special characters/symbols not available on your keyboard appear, replace them by a non used character, and indicate which character corresponds to which symbol in the "read me" file.

12. All file names must be easy for us to identify. Do not use number combinations that we can't identify. If you can include our project number in the folder name it would be a great help.

"Read me" file

1. Please mark down all comments/changes you might have in a README file. This file can also include all possible problems you've encountered in the original document.
