Who's this guy?
Who are the people that make a career out
of they hobby? Are they just lucky? Do they have any exceptional talent or did they just
happen to be at the right place at the right time? For me I'd like to think that it was a
bit of both.
Months of practice with a belt driven Lenco
turntable with strung-up weights finally paid off. In 1979 I got my first DJ-job at a
small local club in my hometown in Sweden. In 1982 I moved with my family to Los Angeles.
It was quite a step for a 16 year old, girlcrazed guy from Gävle. I wasnt exactly
thrilled at the time, but looking back, I wouldnt trade it for a million bucks.
 |
My life in Californa started
in a small community by the San Gabriel mountains called La Cañada. About right between
Pasadena and Glendale. To my dads despair I tuned my room into a small studio and started
making my own special mixes and radioshows. I tried to get a DJ-job at some nightclubs,
but no luck. I was too young. Finally, I got my break from The Swedish Eagle at The World
Famous KROQ. I had sent him a copy of my "Duran Duran-megamix", and before I
knew it I was on Richard Blade's morning show at LAs #1 radio station. That morning
I was nicknamed "Swedish Chris". |
| I did lots of mixes for KROQ
and became well known among their listeners. Most popular were my Megamixes. Simple Minds,
Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Thompson Twins, Heaven 17, the list goes on. You
could say I was on the "cutting-edge", splicing up every song I could get my
hands on, and it didn't take long before some record labels started to take notice. I
teamed up with DJ-friend Boris Granich and Falco's "Rock me Amadeus" beacame our
first "splice" to hit the charts. Our version went straight to #1 on
Billboard's Hot 100 and we got our first gold record for sales exceeding 500 000 copies. |

In spring of '86, a new
station named Power 106 started pumping "a fresh new music mix" across Southern
California. Me and Boris were asked to become special Powermix-DJ's in charge of remixing
the stations hottest tunes. Within a year Power was #1 and our Power- and Clubmixes became
trademarks of the station. We made mixes of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Roxette, Bobby
Brown, Taylor Dayne... the list goes on. Boris & Chris was rockin´ the mix.
|
We started doing special
dance mixes for the labels. In 1986 we got another #1 U.S.-hit with our remix of
Paula Abdul's "Straight Up". This one went platinum! More mixes followed. Boy
George, Jody Watley, Rod Stewart, Depeche Mode, Trans X, and yet another platinum for
Bobby Brown. We did a few swedish acts too. Like Lili & Susie, Style, Trance Dance and
Lena Philipson.
Don't ask me how, but I did all the radio, remixing and DJ-ing on my spare time. I was
still in school! From High School I went on to Pasadena City College studying Graphic Arts
and Marketing for a couple of years. I continued at California State University at
Northridge and got my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Marketing. I
graduated Cum Laude in 1988. God, I'm proud of myself! |

else?). |
So what am I doing back in
Sweden? Sure, life in California was great. When it was good - it was really GOOD!
Sunshine, beaches, girls, parties, nighclubs, sneak previews, showbiz and a bit of fame.
Hey, I was "Swedish Chris". Forget the earthquakes - more people die from
shoveling snow in Sweden every year. But somehow I still wanted to go back and see what
life in Sweden was like. And then one summer I met Marie - the girl that later became my
wife. That's it! |
Back in Sweden I couldn't just let all my
radio experience go to waste. But Sweden didn't have any commercial radio yet. It was
still ILLEGAL !!! So I got myself a job as an AD at local advertising firm and a part time
job at Swedish Radio P4 (public service). Naturally I kept spinning records every weekend
(something I still like to do). Finally in 1993 commercial radio became a reality and in
December of that year I was in charge of putting RIX 105 on the air. Today I'm still the
Station Manager and believes "radio is not a job - its a way of life".
Need I say that my station is #1 in the market?
Take it easy! Chris.
