The belgian FNC was chosen over the M-16A2, the Galil
and the Hk33 in the middle of the eighties. It has since replaced the Ak
4 and the K-pist m/45 as personal weapons in the brigades and the
rangerunits. It is a lighter weapon with a better calibre allowing twice
the amount of ammunition to be carried within the same weight and space
limitations. It is easier to train the riflemen on the new weapon due to
lesser recoil and accuracy at normal combat ranges is better. Some early
teething problems have been sorted out and the weapon is generally liked.
A scopefitted version is called Ak 5B.
