The regiment traces its heritage to the
fänika (tactical unit used in the late dark ages) raised in Västergötlands
southern parts. The oldest documents are from 1549. From the infantry in these
parts a regiment was raised in the early 1600:s that was devided into three
smaller regiments in 1624. One of these became Västgöta-Dals regiment.
The other two became Skaraborgs and Älvsborgs regiment. Västgötadals
regiment was relocated from Västergötland to Halland in 1902 and
consequently changed name to Hallands regiment. Hallands regiment
is located in Halmstad. From 1993-2000 the regiment raised the 16th
infantry brigade with Pbv 501 (BMP 1). The regiment was disbanded in 2000.
The regiments colors where black and
yellow until 1952 due to the regiments Västgöta origin. In 1952 the regiment
recived a new banner with the colors of Halland; blue and white. The heraldic
sign is still the lion of Västergötland.
