Tom Clancy has had a private chat with Ronald
Reagan, lunched with the White House Staff, lectured at
the CIA, and is consulted by international intelligence
experts. All this without being neither a naval officer nor
a former intelligence officer.
Thomas L. Clancy, Jr. was born the 12th of April
1947. He is married and lives in Maryland, USA. He
worked as an insurance broker and always dreamed of
writing a novel. When he read about a Soviet frigate
that attempted to defect to Sweden, he got the idea
for The Hunt for Red October. He sat down and
wrote. The book first showed up in a modest
edition at the American Navy publishing house, but
the readers soon discovered that this incredible
authentic and technically detailed novel was
something completely new in the Thriller category.
After President Ronald Reagan said it was "the
perfect yarn" and
"non-put-downable" the book
became a bestseller. Since then he has been the
Master of Techno Thrillers. He followed up
with Red Storm Rising, which dealt with the
possibility of a third world war, Patriot
Games, were Jack Ryan is hunted by
IRA-terrorists, The Cardinal of the Kremlin,
a spy novel, Clear and Present Danger, witch
dealt with the drug problems, The Sum of All
Fears, a new kind of terrorism, Without
Remorse, how Mr. Clark became what he is,
Debt of Honor, a war between the US and
Japan and Executive Orders which has Jack
Ryan as president. He has also written the
OP-series and some nonfiction books.
Allmost everyone of his books has been the
Times number one bestseller. Clear and
Present Danger was relesed in August 1989 and on
four months it became the eighties most sold book. He
insists that his technical knowledge comes from publicly
available sources and that he has never breached
government security in any of his books. He is regularly
welcomed aboard jets, submarines, and destroyers.
Admirals and Generals give him access, Pentagon
officials debrief him, and many of his books are
required reading at the US's war colleges.
