The Internet

Internet is the word on all peoples lips in today's society, but what is the Internet actually, what is myth and what is real in all rumors about "The Net". How does it work? What is the history behind the Internet? What things are good and what things are bad, about it? What can it be used for in the future? These are some of the frequently asked questions about the Internet.
Internet is a global network and could be equalized to an huge encyclopedia with 70 million pages, without contents or page numbers. Internet is a huge information central which people all over the world can use. It is very hard to explain what you can find on the net in a few words, because you can find everything between heaven and earth there, everything - believe it or not. Internet is also a communication network in which you can send electronic mail. This goes very fast and is very easy. You can also use Internet to send files with data, such as movies, sounds and programs. Internet is also a place where companies can advertise their products and services and also sell their goods.
To get connected to the Internet you need a personal computer and a modem, which is an apparatus that transfer the signals from the computer to the phone line. To surf the web means that you are using a part of the web called "The World Wide Web" (www). World wide web is built up by lots of different sites with information. A site is a place, a side, with information, but it could also be a home page which is a personal file. The good thing with the www is that it is built up by a graphical interface. This means that it is similar to Windows in which you use your cursor and keyboard. When you are out surfing you just click on highlighted words on the sites, these are so called hypertext links which lead you to other sites in the same network or all across the world, you never know. Every site, got its own address called an "URL" which can look like this: http://vrg.se, but it can also be a long one like this: http://elaine.teleport.com/~cdeemer/novel.html. If you want to visit a site, just simply type in the address and press enter. Another way of visiting sites and find information is by using a search engine. A search engine is a program written to remember lots of sites and sort them according to the information on them. You can use those to search at all kinds of words and phrases.
The Internet was from the beginning a network built up by the Pentagon, in case of a war situation during the cold war, in the beginning of the 1980īs. The aim of Pentagon was to create a network which should be unstricable for enemies. The basic idea was to use the tele-system to transfer computer information, this structure differed from the earlier network because there was not any main computer that got all the information, instead there were lots of small personal computers which together built up the entire network. In the beginning of the Internet it was just the military that used it, but later on universities started to transmit data this way to make it faster and safer. From this point the net evolved to became an interactive place in which millions of people could "meet" and share information.
Internet is very good in different ways, it is not just a place with information. It is also a way in which small minorities can get a chance to express themselves. Therefore you can say that the Internet supports free speech, which means that everyone is allowed to say their opinion. The Net is also a good way of sending information and mail from the environmentīs point of view, because you does not have to transport your things with any kind of vehicle. Internet is also very practical for people living in rural areas, because they will not be depending at cars and transportation as much as before if they have the opportunity to pay their rents and buy their food over the Net.
Some people though see the Internet as a threat, because of the free speech system. I am also a bit critical to this, because I do not think that child-pornography should be allowed to be published either if it is on the Internet or in magazines. This is in fact a big threat to the Internet, because there are lots of people which use the Internet in a bad way. For example they publish pornography and tips how to make your own weapons, bombs etc. Another problem of the Net is the fact that it does not rule under any kind of national law. This has done that such things as copyright and trademark have not been followed at all. According to my point of view I certainly think that the governments around the world have lost their control of the Internet, mainly because of their lack of knowledge about it.
The future that involves the Internet is quite unpredictable and is mainly based on hypothesis. I think that the future will be built up by technical stuff like the Internet, not in the same way as the Internet but with the same basic idea of a global network. In the future there will probably be a personal computer in every home. The families will be able to use the computers for different purposes. They will be able to pay their bills, make their bank visits, order products, ask for information and much more. The first step in the development will probably be an extending of the satellite system in use together with computers. In just a few years, the life on earth will be strictly depending on computers. Before these things will became real there are lots of technical problems to be solved at first. The biggest question of today concerning the Net is who is going to pay for all the new technical. Today there are some large companies that contribute with money and sponsorship. The search engines, for example, are paid by companies in exchange for advertisement on their sites.
"Internet is something that concerns the whole humanity and should therefore be given to the same." This is also a great problem for the Internet of today; It is only the well developed countries that have the opportunity to use the Internet, because the less developed have not got either capital or know-how to get on the Net. I certainly think that the future will involve a great deal of technical stuff, such as the Internet as well, but also other things which the future will point out.

Hi there!

My name is Fredrik Nilsson and I am a 17 years old student. I live on an island called Resarö in the archipelago of Stockholm. I have lived here together with my family for 14 years. Before, I lived in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm. We are six persons in my family, I have two younger sisters and one younger brother, so I am the eldest. We live in a chainhouse, which is sort of a villa.
I am very interested in sport. I play both floorball and icehockey, but I am also a football referee. I practice for about five times a week, so I have not that much sparetime. Another interests of mine is computers and the Internet. Unfortunately I have not got as much time as I would like to, to work with my computer.
I am going in an international school, as you certainly already know, called Viktor Rydbergs Gymnasium. The school is in a suburb to Stockholm which is called Djursholm, so I have to travel by bus for about an hour every morning. I choose the school because I did not want to go in an ordinary school, instead I was interested to learn more English, IT and more about Europe. Therefor this school fits me perfect with its international profile, native English speaking teachers and lots of computers. I am going the socialscience program with an economic profile. I like most of the subjects I read, but in particular economics and English. Most of the teachers in my school are not that old, about 35 years in average. That is also good because they then got lots of new ideas and wants to discuss with the students.
About this European program it is a part of the profile of my school and therefor we have to read it. I think it is most interesting to use e-mail and the Internet, but I am also interested to here from you about your school, culture and habits of live.

RESARÖ - VAXHOLM - STOCKHOLM

Resarö is an island in the archipelago of Stockholm in the community of Vaxholm. The archipelago of Stockholm is very big and includes thousands of small islands. Resarö is a rather big island with 1300 year-around living people, but in the summers there are about 3000 inhabitants. In the beginning of this century there were not that many people living on Resarö, just a few farmers, but in the beginning of the 1920īs rich families from Stockholm built big summerhouses to spend their summerholidays in. Later on some of them moved out to live permanently. Today the island is connected by road all the way into Stockholm and it takes about 40 minutes to go by car.
Vaxholm to which Resarö belongs, is a community, but also a town which is located on an other island. It is an old town from the 15 century with a famous tower built to protect the capital from a sea attack. The town has 7000 inhabitants and the entire community 13000. It is very calm in Vaxholm in the winters, but in the summers there are lots of people there as well.
Stockholm is Sweden's capital with more than a million inhabitants including all suburbs. It is an old town from the 12 century. It is probably one of the most beautiful capitals in the world with lots of water and streams. Every year there is a water festival in Stockholm, with lots of people and activities connected to the water which surrounds the city environment.

Calle	Calle is my brother, he is a fourteen year old schoolboy. He is very interested in sport and plays both icehockey and floorball as I do. He is also a big freek of Snowboard and loves to go for a ride.
Maja	Maja is my eldest siter, she is nine years old and goes in third class in the primary school. She is very fond of school and likes to read and write. She is interested in gymnastics and icehockey which she plays as well.
Olivia	Olivia is the youngest in our family. She is a five years old girl that goes at Kindergaten. She is always happy and likes to play with her firends and dolls.
Kerstin	Kerstin is my mother, she is about fourty and works as a PE-teacher in a nearby school to our home. She has been working as a teacher for twenty years by now. She is very interested in beeing in good shape and practise workout.
Rolf	Rolf is the father of mine. We works at Pripps, which is the biggest brewery in Sweden. He has also worked as a PE-teacher as my mother. He is also sport interested and has been involved in Handball for a long time. At Pripps he works as a health promoter to help the employees there stay in shape.
