Hyaluronic Acid
Structural formula
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide with a disaccharide repeating unit
composed of D-glucoronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucoseamine in ß(1-3)
linkage. Each disaccharide unit is attached to the next by ß(1-4)
linkages. Hyaluronic acid is a linear polymer. The carboxyl groups of
hyaluronic acid is completely ionized at pH 7.0.
MicroviscTM; contains the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, sodium
hyaluronate.
Physical properties of pharmacological importance
Because its carboxyl groups are completely ionized and thus negatively
charged at pH 7.0, hyaluronic acid is soluble in water, in which it
forms highly viscous solutions.
