THE TRIP DOWN AND THE ISLAND
OF SANTORINI

Map of Santorini

The first stop on our trip, was the island of Santorini. It was originally a circle shaped volcanically active island until it blew up around 3500 years ago leaving it with the crescent shape it has today (and, incidentally, washing away the Minoan civilisation on Crete with a huge tidal wave). The small island in the center, Nea Kameni, is the newly formed mildly active remains of the volcano.

Now to the pictures. Click on them for a larger view.

6 A.M. checking in at Landvetter airport in Gothenburg. A Coke and a smile. Niels and Doris let the boys in on the secret of their surprise appearance. The trip is their treat.
All together now. On the bus zig-zagging our way down this sheer cliff towards the white boat that will take us to Naxos.
You really can't see it, but this is Mattias sitting in the cockpit. A view through the window to Nea Kameni. No smoke right now but if you went there you could bathe in the hot springs.
Patrik got to sit with the crew in the cockpit during the landing. Finally on the way.
Erik finally gives a break so that we can eat our 'breakfast' and wash it down with a beer and a bourbon ;-) Passing Nea Kameni. Can you guess who was up late packing last night?
First stop, the town of Kamari. We have a 5 hour layover until our boat takes us to Naxos. This is Santorini's capital city, Fira. Built at the top...
Might as well make the best of it. Take a close look, that's the biggest sand I've ever seen and no, she has a top on. ...and bottom of the mountain
A closer look. You can almost figure out who's in the water. A few hours in and we're all gettin' a little thirsty.
As you see in the background, this entire island  rises literally straight up out of the water.
