Naxos is a fertile and
affluent island. It is widely appreciated as an exporter of wine, fine marble and fine
sand used in sandpapper. It is because of the wine that it is known as the god Dionysious'
(Greek god of wine) island. Its rich deposits of marble and the sand used to polish it
made Naxos an important and powerful center of trade in ancient times. It was on Naxos
that the ancient greeks first learned to carve marble statues and to this day the island
is strewn with massive statues (called Kouros) that have lain there as long as 2600 years.
